The Interactive Map Application
Some nice intro text here.
The Campus Flora Project Interactive Map has four main parts:
- Along the top-right, a set of links to this Help and related websites
- A menu of tasks, plus the toolbar for interacting with the map. Tasks enable you to find and interact with data. Available tasks may include: query or search for plants and print a custom map. Tools included on the tool bar are: Identify Map, Zoom In, Zoom Out, Pan, Full Extent, and Overview
- Map
- Console, on the left side of the page, provides information about the map contents and also displays results when added to the Console.
Toolbar
The toolbar allows you to interact with the map by clicking on the map with a tool. For example, if you click in the toolbar on the Zoom In tool, then click on the map, the map will zoom in around where you click.
To use a tool
- In the toolbar, click on the tool you want to use.
- Move the cursor over the map. The cursor may change to indicate the tool you are using.
- Click on the map with the left mouse button. Note: Some tools work by depressing the mouse and dragging the cursor to draw a rectangle, line or polygon, then releasing the mouse button.
- The results depend on the tool. The map appearance may change, such as zooming in or out. Or the results may appear in the Console's Results section, such as with the Identify tool.

Map Contents and Layers
The Campus Flora Project Interactive Map contains several layers of information. A map layer is a type of data shown on the map, such as plants, buildings or an aerial image. You can view the list of the contents of the map, turn on and off layers, and examine the symbols for layers.
To examine the map contents:
- Click the plus button
next to a content item to display the layers
within it.

- A check-box next to the layer indicates whether the layer is currently turned on.
- If enabled, you can click the check-box next to the layer name to turn the layer on or off. The map automatically redraws to reflect the changes in layer visibility.
- Some layers may not be visible at the current map scale (zoom level). These layers are called scale dependent. You may need to zoom the map in or out to see a particular layer displayed, even if its check-box is checked to draw.
- If layers have a plus button
next to the name, you can expand the layer
to display a legend for the layer. The legend
may display a single symbol or multiple symbols
for the layer.

Identify a Plant
If you want to know about a plant on the map, you can get more information about it using the Identify Plant tool.
- In the toolbar,
click the Identify Plant button
.
The button changes to a light background
to indicate it is the active tool
. - Click on the plant you want to identify. An identify
icon
will be placed on the map at the location clicked.
A callout label will also be placed near the
location, with the name of the plant found, if any.
- To view details for the plant, click the
gray down-arrow at the right side of the callout label.
This expands the callout box to show the attributes
of the feature, as well as the layer name, and
an option to add to results (see below).
. - Most plants will have images included in the identify callout. You can enlarge an image by clicking on the thumbnail. A new browser window will open to display a larger version of the image. Additionally, we have imcluded imformational links for a select number of genera. Following these links will bring you to a more detailed description of some of the prized botanical collections on campus.
- If you want to keep this identify result for later use, click the drop-down button on the right side of the callout label, and choose Add to Results. After a few moments, an entry for the location should appear in the Results section of the console. The Location will display the coordinates of the location clicked. See Using Results for more on working with features in the Results window.
- To close the identify callout box that appears on the map,
click the close button
on its upper right. The identify callout will also
be dismissed when the map zooms or pans.
Searching and Querying Plants
The webmap enables you to search and query our plant database for specific plants and display the results on the map.
For example, the query may ask you to enter a value for the name of a city. A more complex query may ask for two or more values, and search using these values. For example, a query may ask for a city name and country name. The query might use the values you enter to look for a city with the name and that is in the country you entered.
- The query and search tasks can be displayed by rolling over these items in the menu area.
- Clicking on one of the drop-down options opens a new dialog window within the
mapping application.
Some examples of possible tasks are shown below.
This dialog window may be moved,
collapsed, and closed.

- Query tasks will provide predefined queries whereas Serach tasks will ask you to enter text relevant to the plant you are looking for.
- Click the dialog Find button to start the search.
- The Results section expands in the Console to display results of the search. The text searched for displays in the results item.
-
If features are found, a plus button
appears next to the results item. Click the
plus button to expand and explore the results.
The example below shows one possible result of a search using Find.

Using Results
The Results panel displays the output from the Identify tool or from a query or search task.
To open the Results window
- Results panel expands automatically after performing a search or after you choose the option to add features found with the Identify tool to the Results panel.
- You can also expand Results by clicking its down-arrow in the Console. If you open Results before doing any search or Identify, the Results panel will be blank.
- You can collapse the Results panel to its title bar by clicking the collapse icon.
- You can resize the height of Results by clicking and dragging the bottom of the Results section.
- If Results is re-opened, previous results will still be visible, along with any new ones just found.

You can then click on the graphic or the label and the label will expand to display all available attributes for the feature. You may scroll through the list of attributes. When you move the cursor away from the graphic, label or box, these items will be hidden. This allows you to easily explore the features highlighted on the map.

Features may be selected (highlighted) on the map by clicking the check-box next to feature names. Query and Serach tasks automaticall highlight features when they are added to the Results. To unselect features uncheck them in the Results window. You can unselect an entire layer or result set by unchecking its check-box in the Results window.
Zooming to Features
You can zoom to one or more features in the Results window. See the table above for illustrations of the right-click menus.

Frequently asked questions
FAQ
Q: Why does it look like there are plants on top of buildings?
These plants generally exist under overhangs or in courtyards that are not reflected on the map.
Q: Why are some plants labeled "unidentified"?
Because we don't know what they are, silly. But we're working on it. If you think you can identify one of these, please, let us know.
Q: I can't see the Query or Search options. Why?
Some features in our map tend not to work with some browsers. This is an issue we are currently trying to resolve. Until then, try viewing the map in Firefox. It always works for us.
